I decided to go for a walk

It had been years since I did this sort of thing, but something in me moved differently that morning and, spurred on by an unseen force, I sprung upright from bed despite my desire to remain warm and comfortable underneath my covers. Half-awake, I navigated through the dark of my bedroom, dawned a comfortable pair of pants, an old t-shirt, and an old pair of boots before stuffing a couple of water bottles into my backpack. Making sure to grab my binoculars, I headed out into the still gray morning to climb a mountain.

A short five-minute drive to the trailhead and much to my elation, I discovered that I first human visitor of the day to McGinty Mountain that day. Hopping out of my car I looked up at the triangular shaped peak wondering how long it would take me to get where faint narrow beams of sunlight licked over the shadowy ridge signaling “reveille” to the valley below. Roosters started to crow and horses whinnied as I slowly made the ascent upwards…
